The Timeless Legacy of Oud

More Than a Scent. A Sacred Tradition.

At Al-Khuld, fragrance is not just about aroma — it is identity, memory, and legacy. Rooted in the sacred traditions of Islamic heritage and the royal courts of old, Oud is a divine gift. It purifies, elevates, and connects the soul to something greater.

Every drop tells a story — of earth, time, and tradition.

The Sacred Timeline of Oud

The earliest records of agarwood (Oud) use trace back to ancient China and India, where it was burned during religious ceremonies and offered to the divine. In Sanskrit, it's known as "Agnilaru" – the "Wood That Sinks in Water."

7th Century CE – Oud in the Time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Oud became central in Islamic culture during the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Its use was both practical and spiritual.

"The best of your perfumes is Musk and Al-Oud."
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Ahmad, Tirmidhi)

"Perfume is for men as water is for fish."
Shu’ab al-Iman by Al-Bayhaqi

The Prophet ﷺ would wear Oud before attending Friday (Jumu’ah) prayers, highlighting its connection to cleanliness, presence, and honour.

“Whoever attends Jumu’ah, let him bathe, wear his best clothes, and use perfume.”
Sahih Muslim

Oud was traded along Silk and Incense Routes, becoming highly prized in Baghdad, Cairo, Andalusia, and even Ottoman courts. Scholars and royalty alike used it in gatherings, believing its scent helped open the heart and sharpen the mind.

8th–13th Century – The Islamic Golden Age

13th–18th Century – Oud as a Royal Gift

In Mughal India, Persia, and Arabia, Oud was given as a diplomatic and royal offering. It symbolised wealth, respect, and divine favour. Bottles were encrusted with gold, stored in carved sandalwood chests.

19th Century – Modern Distillation Begins

Arab perfumers, especially in Yemen and the Hijaz, began refining steam and soak extraction techniques, creating some of the most potent oils ever crafted. These became the precursors of today's premium-grade oils.

Today, Oud remains the essence of refined fragrance and a timeless bridge to Islamic tradition. At Al-Khuld, we uphold its purity—untainted by shortcuts, dilution, or modern compromises.

We don’t simply bottle a scent.
We safeguard a legacy, honour the Sunnah, and reconnect the modern world to a tradition that cannot be purchased—only earned.
